Did you know that the Jubilee Year 2025 began on Christmas Eve? The practice of a jubilee year has ancient roots in the Jewish tradition and evidence for it can be found in the Old Testament. The jubilee year was called every fifty years and was a time for forgiveness. It stood as a reminder of God's providence and mercy. The dedication of a year for this emphasis provided the community with a time to come back into right relationship with one another and with God. As the practice of the jubilee year was adopted into the Catholic Church, these themes of mercy, forgiveness, and solidarity continued.
The Jubilee Year offers opportunities to participate in various jubilee events at the Vatican and in our own archdiocese. Pope Francis opened the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica on December 24, 2024 to officially begin the 2025 Jubilee. For pilgrims who cannot travel to Rome, bishops may designate their cathedrals or a popular Catholic shrine as special places of prayer for Holy Year pilgrims, offering opportunities for reconciliation, indulgences and other events intended to strengthen and revive faith.

pilgrimage sites in mobileArchbishop Rodi has designated the following churches and monasteries as pilgrimage sites for the Jubilee Year:
- Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Mobile
- Carmelite Monastery, Mobile
- Holy Redeemer, Eufaula
- Our Lady Queen of Peace, Selma
- St. Bede the Venerable, Montgomery
- St. Jude Monastery, Marbury
- St. Margaret of Scotland, Foley
- St. Martin of Tours, Troy
- Visitation Monastery, Mobile
Those making a pilgrimage to one of the above churches or monasteries may obtain the Jubilee plenary indulgence if they “devoutly visit any Jubilee site and there, for a suitable period of time, engage in Eucharistic adoration and meditation, concluding with the Our Father, the Profession of Faith in any legitimate form, and invocations to Mary, the Mother of God.” The usual conditions for the reception of a plenary indulgence still apply: detachment from all sin, sacramental confession, reception of Holy Communion, and prayer for the Holy Father. Additional ways to obtain the Jubilee indulgence can be found in the Decree on the Granting of the Indulgence During the Ordinary Jubilee Year 2025 Called by His Holiness Pope Francis issued by the Apostolic Penitentiary on May 13, 2024.
